Grant, President Abraham Lincoln and Admiral David Porter, met aboard the steamer River Queen a few days before the surrender of General Lee and the signing of peace.  They were discussing the terms of the surrender.  The original painting hangs in the White House in Washington D.C.  You can see this masterfully reproduced painting in the parlor of the U.S. Grant Home in Galena, Illinois.
